Cactus plants (tzabar) and their fruits (sabra) are thorny on the outside but soft and sweet inside.  When planted close together the prickly and somewhat ungainly plants create an almost impossible natural barrier.

The tough on the outside and soft on the inside fruit of the cactus – sabra - is the term also used to describe Israeli-born Jews and is even described as such in the Oxford dictionary. more...
